A blockbuster calendar of events is coming to Queensland this year with more than 124 major and regional events scheduled to attract visitors and support tourism in communities throughout the State.

From the Coast to the Outback, Cairns to Coolangatta, an exciting line up of arts and music festivals, sporting events, cultural celebrations, business events and gourmet food and wine festivals are on offer.

Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Minister Jann Stuckey said the 2013 event calendar would be delivered by the State’s new ‘super’ tourism body Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ).

“Tourism and events are intrinsically linked and going forward TEQ will be able to better leverage activities to grow visitor expenditure and ensure all efforts to attract visitors and events are focussed on achieving the best results and the greatest value for money for Queensland taxpayers,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Major events in Queensland delivered a projected economic boost of $244.3 million in 2011-12 and that is why the Newman Government allocated $49.6 million for major, regional and business events in 2012-2013.

“You just have to look at the success of events such as the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival which delivered $7.52 million in 2011 and $8.8 million in 2012 – that’s a growth of almost $1.3 million in the first year of the event.

“Pair this with successful events like the 2012 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships which generated 62,682 visitor nights, and Queensland has proven itself as an outstanding, premier event destination.”

In the past financial year, more than 1.1 million people attended the State’s major events generating more than 1 million visitor nights for Queensland.

This year’s calendar will build on the profile of Queensland destinations, growing from 29 major events in 2011 to 44 in 2013.

2013 event calendar highlights include:

·         Bolshoi Ballet as part of the QPAC International Series

·         Inaugural Great Barrier Reef Masters Games

·         British & Irish Lions Tour at Suncorp Stadium

·         NRL Cairns Regional Fixture, Rabbitohs vs Titans

·         Birdsville Races

·         Noosa International Food and Wine Festival

·         Gold Coast Airport Marathon

·         Cairns Airport Adventure Festival

Major Queensland events in 2013 will be complemented by the extensive Regional Development Program which will assist in the delivery of 80 events in regional communities as well as six international business events attracting more than 4,000 delegates.

“The 2013 event calendar is a great example of Queensland’s ability to host high-calibre events in the lead up to the 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships and the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games,” she said.
