The Gabba will play host to more than just the best cricketers from Australia and England during the first few days of the Ashes.

Major Events Minister Jann Stuckey and Sports Minister Steven Dickson today announced the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy would also be onsite for fans to take photos with, as part of a promotion for the Cricket World Cup 2015.

Ms Stuckey said a photo booth would be set up with the Cup for the first three days of the Ashes test.

“The world’s best players will be competing for the ultimate cricket prize in 2015 and Queenslanders have a chance this week to be a part of the World Cup excitement,” Ms Stuckey said.

“The Newman Government is continuing to support major sporting and entertainment events which have a vital role in growing tourism as one of the four pillars of the Queensland economy.

“The 2010 Ashes pumped around $59 million into the Queensland economy and we’re expecting a similar boost this time around, with the first three days of the Test already close to being sold out.

Mr Dickson said the booth would be operating each day between 8am to 2pm just outside Gate 2 of the Gabba in Woolloongabba Place.

“We’re focused on getting Queenslanders involved in sport at all levels, delivering better infrastructure and facilities like our recently completed $5.1 million Gabba upgrade,” Mr Dickson said.

“This refurbishment project will ensure The Gabba can continue to host top line cricket like the Ashes, next year’s Test versus India and Cricket World Cup matches.”

The Cricket World Cup 2015 will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand from 14 February to 28 March 2015.

Fans who register before 5 February will get access to an exclusive 48 hour early purchase option before all tickets go on sale.

Ms Stuckey said the three pool matches to be played at The Gabba were:

·         Australia v Bangladesh on Saturday 21 February

·         Ireland v Qualifier 4 on Wednesday 25 February

·         Pakistan v Zimbabwe on Sunday 1 March

“The highlight will be the Saturday night match between Australia and Bangladesh,” Ms Stuckey said.
