Currumbin Not Receiving Desal Water …But Paying the Price!

Jann Stuckey, Member for Currumbin, has accused the State Government of ongoing secrecy and cover-ups over the Tugun Desalination Plant with the discovery that homes through the Currumbin electorate are not receiving any desalinated water.

“A reply to a question requesting the percentage of desalinated water and dam water as well as any other additives for desalination output figures revealed that the Currumbin electorate is still receiving 100 percent dam water,” said Ms Stuckey.

“The Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy also commented that lime and carbon were added to the dam water at rates of up to 57mg/L and 47mg/L, along with 0.9mg/L of chlorine.

“According to the Minister’s reply, between 1 July and 31 October 2009 over 9,750 megalitres were supplied.

“If homes and businesses in the Currumbin electorate are not receiving any desalinated water from the Tugun plant then who is?

“It begs the question, where has almost 10,000 megalitres of water gone, and why have Tugun residents and those in neighbouring suburbs had to put up with enormous intrusions into their lives in order for the plant to supply water elsewhere?

“Water rates have risen as a direct impact of the plant’s construction and prices are projected to continue to soar, from an average $503 in 2007-08 to $807 in 2012-13.

“Considering the mess that the residents of Tugun have put up with since 2006, this new information is yet another slap in the face for them.

“Extracting information from this Government about this project is worse than pulling teeth. No progress announcements are forthcoming and residents feel they have been left in the dark.

“Labor’s track record on safe drinking water supply and monitoring is woeful.

“An overdose of fluoride from the North Pine Dam Water Treatment Plant in May this year affected hundreds of residents in South East Queensland, proving the State Government’s water regulation is dodgy.

“Residents of Currumbin, and Tugun in particular have been dealt blow after blow by this Labor Government.  Despite this appalling treatment the question still remains as to the quality of water we are being forced to drink while this government dithers.”
