Currumbin Residents Urged to be Fire Ready

State MP for Currumbin Jann Stuckey urged local residents to be fire ready as the risks of property and life endangering fires increase.

“Wet conditions early this year and last year have led to a growth in vegetation which is becoming more at risk of fire with the current dry spell,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Our rural brigades and Gold Coast City Council officers have already taken measures to reduce fire risks by back-burning in some areas.”

“Whilst the threat of a fire such as that which devastated Victoria is very low it should never be discounted.

“With our local community home to some of the largest tracks of vegetation in and around the Gold Coast, it is important local residents be as fire ready as possible.”

Ms Stuckey said the advice from authorities was that local residents should clear bush and potential sources of fuel from around their homes.

A hose should be ready at all times.

Guttering should be kept clear of any potentially flammable leaves or debris.

A bush fire plan is worthwhile and is important in higher risk areas.  This should include possible ways of evacuating as well as the possibility of examining safe areas locally.

Always dial 000 in an emergency.
