Gold Coast receives events boost

Gold Coast will welcome thousands of visitors to events across the region following a funding boost of$155,000from the Newman Government’s Events Queensland Regional Development Program.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Jann Stuckey said the LNP Government was proud to continue investing in the Gold Coast region through its support of local events.

“Regional events play a vital role in supporting Queensland’s tourism industry and provide significant economic and social benefits to local communities,” she said.

“Getting behind events which attract visitors to Queensland’s regional areas reflects our determination to establish Queensland as Australia’s number one tourist destination and our 2020 goal to boost overnight visitor spending in Queensland to $30 billion.

“The Newman Government is investing an extra $1.8 million in supporting 64 regional events across the State ranging from art and music carnivals to sporting events, cultural celebrations and gourmet food and wine festivals.”

Gold Coast events to receive funding include:
• BLEACH Surfing the Fringe, Gold Coast – a premier surf culture festival celebrating the outdoor lifestyle of the Gold Coast through an artistic program including music, art, writing, film, theatre and photography. Held 9-24 February 2013. Funding amount $50,000.

• Burleigh Pro, Burleigh – attracting some of the world’s best surfing talent to compete on the Gold Coast’s iconic point break. Held 6-10 February 2013. Funding amount $25,000.

• Gold Coast Film Festival, Southport – an annual celebration of screen culture featuring cinema screenings and workshops. Held 18-28April 2013. Funding amount $25,000.

• Swell Sculpture Festival, Currumbin – a free outdoor visual arts exhibition spanning more than 1km along the Currumbin Beach ocean walkway and parklands. Held 14-23 September 2012. Funding amount $25,000.

• World Professional Kite Surfing Tour, Main Beach – part of the PKRA World Tour, which is the only International Sailing Federation sanctioned world tour for the freestyle discipline of kite surfing. Held 1-9 December 2012. Funding amount $20,000.

• Queensland Ocean Swim Series, Coolangatta – part of a three-event series on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast which includes the Wrecked swim, Cooly Classic and Kings of the Coast. Held 13-28 April 2013. Funding amount $10,000.
More than $20 million has been invested in 918 events through the Events Queensland Regional Development Program since 2001.
