Jann Stuckey, Member for Currumbin has accused the Bligh Government of backing away from their election promise to “bring back Kirra” with news that stage two works have been put on hold.

“The minister continually tosses around the figure of $1.5million to fix Kirra which was a knee-jerk offer made during an election campaign, yet now she says Mother Nature has done the job for them,” said Ms Stuckey.

“Twenty thousand cubic metres of sand has been moved to date with equal amounts to sections of Kirra and Palm Beach but the Minister refuses to reveal the costs to date.

“Surely the Minister knows how much she has budgeted to spend on this activity. If she doesn’t then she darn well should.

“In addition the minister also refused to say how much has been allocated for the consultation process being undertaken with Gold Coast City Council.

“Now the minister has halted further works without any warning which further proves just how poorly this election promise was thought through.

“It is obvious this election promise was cobbled together without any idea of the scope of the problem and this Government have spent taxpayers money at their whim.

“Claims by the Bligh Government that they are openly transparent and accountable are hollow.

“For several years now I have been asking on behalf of residents for more flexibility in the grid, better monitoring of the project and thorough community consultation.

“The people of Queensland deserve to know how much has already been spent on this project which impacts heavily upon our treasured beach and foreshore amenities.
