Hospital Bus Route Knocked Back

Member for Currumbin, Jann Stuckey MP, is bitterly disappointed by the Labor Government’s refusal to consider a direct bus route to John Flynn Hospital.

“John Ray of Elanora initiated a petition which was signed by over 1400 residents, indicating a substantial level of need and use of a service from a central location such as The Pines to the hospital,” Ms Stuckey said.

“The Minister for Transport has replied that Translink does not plan to implement a direct bus route from The Pines to the John Flynn Hospital.

“Further, the Minister advised that patrons wanting to access the hospital already have the option of catching a bus along the Gold Coast Highway and interchanging.

“This is a slap in the face for residents. Labor’s Transport Minister, Rachel Nolan, has completely ignored the needs of the Currumbin Electorate.

“A direct route was available a number of years ago, however this was taken away by the same Labor Government.

“Queensland seniors and local residents should not be burdened with catching multiple buses when the Tweed has a direct route to the hospital.

“John Flynn Hospital is already choking from a lack of carparking spaces, and currently has an application before Council for an additional 114 carparks to ease the daily strain.

“To their credit, the hospital has initiated an incentive scheme to encourage staff to leave their cars at home and walk or use public transport to get to work.

“Additionally, in conjunction with the Currumbin RSL, John Flynn is trialling a free shuttle bus service running at regular intervals throughout the day offering a direct service to the Hospital from the RSL carpark.

“While I praise the efforts of the organisations, communities should not have to supply services that the State Government is too negligent to provide.

“Having a direct bus service from a convenient location such as the Pines would provide a much greater benefit to a lot more people.
“What will it take for this Government to deliver basic bus services where and when they are needed?
