THE LNP has welcomed reports that cyclone-hit Dunk Island has been purchased by mining magnate Peter Bond who plans to rebuild facilities as a 4-star resort.

LNP Shadow Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business Jann Stuckey said it was great news for Far North Queensland tourism that had been abandoned by the long-term Labor government and its lack-lustre Tourism Minister Jan Jarratt.

“Dunk Island has been icon of Queensland’s tropical resorts for decades and it’s great to hear it’s going to be back in business.”

Ms Stuckey said the resort had been closed since Cyclone Yasi hit FNQ in February.

“The LNP is committed to working with industry to help Queensland tourism get back on track.

“An LNP government will improve decision-making and government support for tourism through a whole of government approach.

“We will facilitate new infrastructure and investment by establishing a specialised unit within a tourism department.

“And we will scrap Labor’s waste tax that came into force today and will drive up operating costs for all tourism operators, particularly island resorts.

“Only an LNP Government has tourism as one of its four pillars for growth to get Queensland back on track.”
