The LNP has welcomed World Tourism Day and reaffirmed tourism as one of its four key pillars to the Queensland economy.

“Today is about celebrating tourism and what it does for our economy and the work of our tourism operators,” Shadow Minister for Tourism Jann Stuckey said.

“Campbell Newman and the LNP team recognise the hard work, commitment and dedication that are put in by countless thousands of people every day to ensure holiday makers and visitors enjoy the unique Queensland experience.

Ms Stuckey said tourism continues to be strangled with red tape under this tired, 20 year old Labor Government and a carbon tax would only hurt them more.

“This onerous tax will force up the cost of flights, accommodation and transport, and all tourism operators will bear the brunt of the increased cost of operating,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Tourism Minister Jan Jarratt and this lazy Labor Government have been silent on the devastating effect the carbon tax will have on our tourism industry.

“On this world day of tourism the Minister needs to stand up for tourism operators and demand Julia Gillard and Anna Bligh drop this onerous tax because it will only hurt Queensland tourism further.

“No matter how hard someone works to make a go of their business and how good their customer service is, if the input costs are as much as the money coming over the counter, then tourism operators can’t make a decent living.”

“The CanDo LNP government will oppose the Carbon Tax and work with tourism operators to cut red tape and develop a plan to encourage, stimulate and revive tourism in Queensland.”
