Member for Currumbin, Jann Stuckey was delighted to support a new piece of legislation that was passed this week in the Queensland Parliament to recognise and reward high performing teachers.

“We know our teachers do a great job and now through this new certification process in Queensland, high performing teachers will be recognised and rewarded as Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers.

“The new certification process is consistent with a national framework, and is designed to recognise and promote quality teaching by providing an opportunity for teachers to reflect on their practice and apply for these new qualifications.

“It’s a known fact that teachers are leaving the profession at an alarming rate. The opportunity for teachers to attain a higher qualification, yet stay in the classroom rather than move into a more administrative role, requires the adoption of new measures that will assist in retaining high performing teachers through enhanced qualifications with corresponding salaries.

“Commencing on 1 July 2019 remuneration for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers will be among the highest in the country.

“Teacher retention rate is a real concern in Queensland, so it is to be hoped that this initiative will stem the flow away from the profession and encourage them to continue their role as a classroom teacher.

“We are blessed with some fantastic schools in the Currumbin electorate with outstanding dedicated teachers.

“They are all different and unique in their own way, some very small and others with over 1,000 and even 2,000 students, but all have the same admirable dedication to provide quality learning in a safe and happy environment.
