Outback Queensland celebrates tourism excellence

The Newman Government has extended its congratulations to the winners of the 2012 Longreach Airport Outback Queensland Tourism Awards.

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey attended the awards ceremony in Longreach last night, and said the awards set a benchmark for industry excellence.

“The Longreach Airport Outback Queensland Tourism Awards help ensure our regional tourism industry is continually striving to serve visitors and the community better,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Our outback towns rely heavily on the tourism market, and the Newman Government has hit the ground running to reinvigorate this vital sector.

“We will continue to support the Outback Queensland tourism and events industry because we understand that these sectors provide significant economic and social benefits to local communities.

”Ms Stuckey was on hand to present the Hosted Accommodation Award to the Dalrymple Tourist Van Park, Charters Towers.

“I would like to congratulate all of the award winners along with the Outback Queensland Tourism team, Tourism Queensland, the Longreach Regional Council and sponsors for their dedication to these Awards and the regional tourism industry.”

The 2012 Longreach Airport Outback Queensland Tourism Award winners are:
•         Hosted Accommodation: Dalrymple Tourist Van Park, Charters Towers.
•         Accommodation: Longreach Motor Inn.
•         Tourism Restaurants and Catering Services: Birdsville Hotel.
•         Visitor Information and Services: Winton Visitor Information Centre.
•         New Tourism Development: Outback Aussie Tours Day Tour Program and Brochure
•         Tourism Marketing: Overlander’s Way – marketing and re-branding project stage 2.
•         Heritage Cultural Tourism: Kinnon & Co – Cobb & Co Tours. Highly Commended: Qantas Founders Museum
•         Tourist Attractions: Outback Aussie Day Tours – Drover’s Sunset Dinner Cruise.
•         Festivals and Events: Outback Festival.
•         Best Outback Queensland Pub: Birdsville Hotel.
•         Most Significant Council Tourism Initiative: Winton Shire Council – Self Drive and GPS Brochure Series. Highly Commended: Blackall Tambo Regional Council.
•         Tour and/or Transport Operators: Kinnon & Co.
•         Major Tourist Attractions: Qantas Founders Museum. Highly Commended: Kinnon & Co.
•         Outstanding Contribution by a Volunteer or Volunteer Group: Barcaldine Regional Council – Harry Redford Cattle Drive.
•         Young Achievers Award: Kate McDonald. Highly Commended: Aaron Skinn.
•         The Vince Evert Award for Outstanding Contribution to Outback Tourism: Alan Smith.

Ms Stuckey also congratulated Outback Aussie Tours, who were inducted into the Outback Queensland Tourism Awards Hall of Fame for winning the Tourism Marketing Award three years in a row – a remarkable achievement.
