Tourism operators across the Outback have been recognised by their peers at the annual Outback Tourism Awards, held last night in Mt Isa.

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey was on hand to congratulate the 2013 award winners, who have played an important role in growing the region’s tourism industry.

“Tourism is one of the four pillars of the economy and is undergoing a revival under the Newman Government thanks to the help of these groups,” Ms Stuckey said.

“These awards recognise the very best of our industry and last night’s winners should be proud of their achievements.

“Operators from across the Outback came in their droves as a record turnout celebrated an outstanding year, with their peers.”

Ms Stuckey noted the high standard of tourism operators within the Outback region, particularly Kinnon and Co, Darymple Van Park and the Birdsville Hotel which were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“These operators exemplify the good work being done across this state to boost the experiences of visitors,” she said.

“Tourism suffered under Labor, but it’s been prioritised by the Newman Government through our commitment to double annual overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020.

“High quality operators such as these put us well on the way to achieving this goal.”

Member for Gregory, Vaughan Johnson applauded the winners, who represented the region’s diverse tourism industry.

“Queensland’s Outback boasts a wide range of experiences that delight domestic and international tourists alike,” Mr Johnson said.

“Last night’s winners are great examples of the depth and breadth of our tourism sector.

“As an Outback MP, I am very proud to represent these operators and I congratulate all winners on their achievements.”
