Rural Firies Denied Consultation on Sweeping Changes

The Palaszczuk Labor Government has come under fire from Rural Fire Service volunteers for making sweeping changes without any consultation with brigade volunteers.

Member for Currumbin Jann Stuckey says it’s shameful that all three of the rural fire brigades in the Currumbin electorate, and throughout the state have been ignored by the Minister.

“Our dedicated volunteers, who make up more than 90 percent of Queensland’s fire-fighting capability are being pushed aside and completely ignored by this arrogant Labor government,” said Ms Stuckey.

“Around 21 changes are to be made and requests for written information have been denied, angering brigade members, many who have served as volunteers for decades.

This refusal to supply information is even more disgraceful as the changes are due to be implemented on April 1st.

“One station official told me they have a meeting with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) on April the 4th to tell them what the changes are, yet they will have already commenced on April 1st.

“Just what sort of consultation is that? Clearly it isn’t consultation at all, it’s dictatorship.

“Tallebudgera Rural Fire Brigade said that the process is frustrating and becoming ridiculous, adding that the changes, some operational, are being foisted upon members and the goal posts keep moving.

“Another brigade member stated it feels like volunteers are being pushed to the side and commented “Volunteers enter to serve their community and are then told if you don’t like how it is run, get out. That’s not how to talk to volunteers.

“One rural fire station said they couldn’t comment because they don’t know anything about what is going on.

“There’s been total a lack transparency, lack of information and a lack of consultation from the Palaszczuk Government and shows utter contempt for our volunteer fire fighters who put in countless hours of training and service.

“Our volunteer firies bravely and selflessly defend our communities and deserve to be included in discussions about the changes not pushed aside and taken for granted”
