WORKERS and students continue to be placed at risk by Minister Schwarten’s failure to heed Workplace Health & Safety warnings about complying with school asbestos removal procedures, the LNP said today.

Shadow Minister for Public Works and Information and Communication Technology Jann Stuckey said Minister Robert Schwarten still had not learned from previous investigations into inappropriate asbestos removal practices.

“Once again the handling of hazardous materials has been called into question under this minister’s watch,” said Ms Stuckey.

“In September last year, a Workplace Health & Safety Queensland Investigation Report into the removal of asbestos from Caningeraba State School found that Q-Build had failed to comply with their own policies regarding asbestos handling.

“The Minister claimed not only would QBuild implement all recommendations from the previous report, but insisted ‘this must never happen again’.

“Five months later and the Minister has been forced to announce another investigation into yet another asbestos incident, this time from a Mackay School.

“How many individual investigations are needed before this minister will ensure that the training his department provides its workers is adequate?

“This is a Minister who rolls out tired old lines and tired old excuses to hide that he has not learned anything from the previous report.

“Now we have another investigation and no guarantee that any future findings will be taken seriously.”
