Stuckey calls for Action on Koala Deaths

Member for Currumbin Jann Stuckey has today called on the Palaszczuk Government to stop their talkfest and take action over the increasing number of koala deaths on Tallebudgera Connection Road.

“Too many koalas are dying on our roads and despite multiple calls for action to implement initiatives to promote koala safety on this section of road Labor has done absolutely nothing,” Ms Stuckey said.

“In the lead up to the State election in November the then Minister for the Environment stood at the Tallebudgera location with the Labor candidate for Currumbin and stated:

“We've put an expert panel in place to tell us exactly what policy settings to put in place to give our koalas a better chance of survival. I will meet with the Main Roads Minister to talk about what we can do on this particular stretch of road and stay tuned between now and the election to see what a re-elected Labor government will do to protect habitat and protect our koalas.

“Well that was six months ago and the report that Labor’s ‘expert panel’ were due to deliver on 30 June 2017 has not been published nor do we know if it has been completed.

"The minister for the Environment must be proactive on this serious matter. Failure to do so makes a mockery of Labor's election promise and their regard for koala protection.

“This report is almost 12 months overdue and koalas are still dying on our roads and that is why I asked the following question in parliament today:

“Could the Minister advise:

a) When the report will be released?

b) Has the Environment Minister met with the Main Roads Minister on this matter and if so when?

c) What were the outcomes of the meeting to protect our endangered Koalas?

d) When will the new Koala strategy be announced?

“Labor has turned their back on our community and the wildlife in Currumbin on this issue.

"I call on the Environment Minister to advise when this report will be released, why it has been withheld and when the new koala strategy will be announced?

“The Minister also needs to advise if she has in fact met with the Main Roads Minister regarding this matter; and what were the outcomes, if any, of the meeting to protect our endangered koalas.

“I will continue to pursue Labor’s inaction over this matter until they are finally forced to act and protect our local koala population.
