Member for Currumbin, Jann Stuckey MP, is continuing to lobby the State Government to reinstate a direct bus route from The Pines to John Flynn Hospital.

“I have written a letter to the Minister for Transport expressing the disappointment of residents at her negative response to the petition calling for a direct bus service to the hospital,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Telling customers that the only way to access the hospital is to catch multiple buses is a slap in the face for the many frail and elderly individuals who rely on public transport.

“The petition was signed by over 1400 concerned residents, and I have received an influx of calls to my office from unhappy locals who want to continue the fight for a direct bus.

“In addition, retired and current bus drivers have provided information to my office with working suggestions on diverting existing routes to reach the hospital.

“Suggestions include extending the existing 767 route that runs from The Pines to Tugun Heights, a further 6 minutes down to the hospital and returning to link in with the current route.

“It has also been suggested that the 761 route, which runs from Robina Station down past The Pines and along the Gold Coast Highway to Tweed via the Airport, be diverted to include the hospital.

“These suggestions have been passed on to the Minister for consideration, and I congratulate members of the community who are determined to get better services.

“A direct route to the hospital from The Pines was operating until November 2007 when it was removed by the State Government following a network restructure.

“I question whether the community was made aware at the time that this route was under threat of disappearing.

“I have written to the Minister, asking her to reconsider her decision based on the suggestions provided, as well as the fact that so many in our local area have rallied behind the need for this service.

“The Minister’s refusal to implement a direct route is simply not good enough.
