Member for Currumbin, Jann Stuckey MP used a speech in State Parliament to highlight the continued secrecy of the Bligh Government over the Tugun desalination plant.

“In last year’s budget, the Bligh Labor Government listed the Gold Coast Desalination Plant as a completed and commissioned project under the heading of ‘2008-09 Achievements’”, Ms Stuckey said.

“Confusion erupted in this year’s estimates hearing where it was revealed there was further funding committed to the Tugun plant in the 2010-11 budget.

“In fact, $30.8 million has been allocated in this year’s budget statements for works at the supposedly completed desal plant which is a significant amount of money needing to be spent.

“All very muddling indeed, especially when the government last year was boasting that this project was ‘done and dusted’.

“The defect-ridden plant has suffered a litany of mistakes and setbacks since day one. Repairs to the inlet pipe, replacement of holding tanks and pipework, corrosion of supposedly non-corrodible stainless steel parts, the list is phenomenal.

“Then there is the human factor – delays, damage to homes, disruptions and excuses are all taking a toll on people’s lives.

“Despite continual requests from myself and local media, no breakdown of costings has been made available, highlighting again this government’s lack of accountability.

“Latest reports reveal that WaterSecure will not provide the costings due to confidentiality.

“When will Queenslanders finally get to learn the truth about this major infrastructure headache?
