Stuckey Fears for Cyclists Safety

Member for Currumbin, Jann Stuckey, is calling on the Palaszczuk Government to introduce an urgent education and safety awareness campaign to prevent a serious accident on Currumbin Creek Road.

"Cyclists are dicing with death by riding along sections of Currumbin Creek Road that are so narrow they do not provide any protections for them," said Ms Stuckey.

"They are competing with vehicles for limited space and it’s an accident waiting to happen. Cyclists must be warned of the dangers of riding along this road and all road users should be reminded of their responsibilities when sharing the road.

"On 13 October last year I raised my concerns about cyclist safety along this section of road in letters to the Government and GOLDOC, asking for an education campaign to be rolled out as a matter of urgency."

"By including this already dangerous section of road in the new route for the Commonwealth Games Cycling Road Race events on 14 April, GOLDOC organisers and the Palaszczuk Government have encouraged cyclists to use it prior to the Games.

"It appears the challenge to ride the Games course has become a ‘bucket list’ item list for cyclists wanting to pit their fitness against the Commonwealth’s best cyclists. But more cyclists on this already unsuitable, compromised road means that motorists are growing increasingly frustrated"

"The original route took riders out through the valley and not along heavily trafficked, narrow winding bends, light industrial and high density residential areas"

"Instead of using the footpath that runs alongside the road cyclists ride in singles and packs on the road and expose themselves to danger."

"Let me be clear - I am pro cycling and, as former Games Minister I am supportive of them - but this could have been planned so much better - both from a safety perspective and to minimise inconvenience to road users."

"I just don’t want to see anyone get hurt and that is why I am calling on the Palaszczuk Government to introduce an urgent education and safety awareness campaign to warn drivers and cyclists of the dangers of riding along narrow sections of Currumbin Creek Road."

"I also urge the Currumbin Community to take extra care on this section of road."
