LNP Member for Currumbin and vocal advocate for koala protection, Jann Stuckey MP, has said she will be fighting strongly for Currumbin Wildlife Hospital to share in the LNP’s funding commitment to koala rescue and rehabilitation.

LNP Leader Campbell Newman recently announced the LNP’s comprehensive action plan to protect Queensland’s iconic koala population.

“In the past three years, koala numbers have fallen by over 50 per cent in some areas of Queensland yet the Bligh Labor Government has failed to act,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Protecting koalas requires more than just focusing on habitat loss, and the LNP understands this.

“Under a CanDo LNP Government, there will be a $26.5 million comprehensive action plan for protecting Queensland’s koalas.

“We will spend $22.5 million to acquire koala habitat for preservation, with a focus on habitat connectivity.”

Ms Stuckey said the Labor Government’s botched attempts at koala habitat prevention under former minister Kate Jones were fragmented and failed to make a difference.

“The LNP will also invest $3.2 million into researching koala diseases and preventable causes of death, injury and illness.

“Importantly, the LNP also recognises the hard work of front line organisations that do so much in protecting and rehabilitating koalas and will provide funding of $800,000 to help them to carry out their essential rescue and rehabilitation services.

“If the LNP win government, I will be fighting for a fair share of this funding so Currumbin Sanctuary’s Wildlife Hospital can continue its outstanding work.

“Figures from Senior Veterinarian Dr Michael Pyne show koala admissions to the Hospital are increasing at an alarming rate, with over 200 koalas admitted last year, up from 148 the previous year.

“There is a strong case for the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital to receive a share of the funding that the LNP is committing, and I will be knocking loudly on the future Minister’s door to make sure Currumbin is uppermost in their mind.

“Only a CanDo LNP Government will achieve the balance between the protection of our koalas, economic development and the social wellbeing of Queensland communities.”
