Member for Currumbin Jann Stuckey MP has applauded the Newman Government for its common sense approach to Queensland public holidays through the passage of the Holidays and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2012.

“This legislation returns the Queen’s Birthday public holiday to the second Monday in June and relocates the Labour Day public holiday from May to the first Monday in October,” Ms Stuckey said.

“A backlog of public holidays in the first half of the year and an absence in the second half of the year was tough on families and tough on business and these changes effectively break up that congestion.

“Public consultation indicated Queenslanders wanted a public holiday in the second half of the year with strong support to move Labour Day as opposed to the Queen’s Birthday. The Newman Government listened and provided that change.

“The Queen’s Birthday holiday will be consistent with all other states and territories with the exception of Western Australia.

“Local events including Cooly Rocks On are delighted by this move that will allow the team to build on the festival in the coming years and provide certainty for those wishing to attend the festival.

“Traditionally the winter period is quiet for tourism operators and this legislation acknowledges the importance of the Queen’s Birthday holiday remaining in June.

“We are a government that listens to small business, that listens to tourism operators and that listens to Queenslanders.
