The Sunshine Coast will welcome close to 2,000 athletes from around the world to the shores of Mooloolaba as the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast gets off to a running start this weekend.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events Jann Stuckey said the first IRONMAN event for the region was a great addition to the state’s sporting calendar.

“Queensland is fast developing a reputation as the home of triathlon, with the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast complementing the popular Noosa and Mooloolaba Triathlons and IRONMAN Cairns events,” Ms Stuckey said.

“The first of its kind for the region, the IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast has already seen incredible success with online entries selling out within two hours.”

Showcasing the stunning scenery of the Sunshine Coast to visitors from across the globe, competitors will swim along the crystal waters of Mooloolaba’s surf beach, cycle while taking in views of Mt Coolum, and run along Mooloolaba Esplanade and Alexandra Headlands.

Ms Stuckey said securing events like this through Tourism and Events Queensland was part of the Queensland Government’s goal to double the annual overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020.

“Major events like this demonstrate Queensland’s ability to host high-quality international sporting festivals, driving visitation and showcasing the state’s spectacular destinations on a world-stage,” she said.

“Hundreds of interstate and international athletes have signed up to compete in the IRONMAN 70.3 event, on Queensland’s naturally refreshing Sunshine Coast.”

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said that the IRONMAN 70.3 was a great addition to the Sunshine Coast’s event calendar.

“The IRONMAN 70.3 Series is the fastest growing triathlon series in the world. This weekend’s inaugural Sunshine Coast event joins 59 events held in 24 countries that serve as qualifiers for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship,” she said.
