Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey today welcomed the announcement that Australian tennis favourites Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur would start their 2013 season in Queensland at the Brisbane International.

“To have two of Australia’s sporting heroes, including Queenslander Samantha Stosur, compete at the Brisbane International 2013 is great news for Queensland tennis fans,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Major events have a proven track record of delivering significant economic benefits for the host-region and return on taxpayer investment. That’s why in this year’s Budget events funding was increased to $49.6 million in 2012-13.

“The Brisbane International is a great event on Queensland’s sporting calendar, last year attracting a record 92,802 attendees.”

Currently ranked at World No.9, Stosur returns to the 2013 tournament for her fourth Brisbane International.

“Samantha is a home-town hero, having trained at the Queensland Academy of Sport and competed in tennis tournaments across the globe,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Queensland is very proud of her and we look forward to welcoming her back to Brisbane in 2013.”
For Hewitt, the 2013 tournament will be his first appearance at the Brisbane International.

Hewitt delivered a strong performance in 2012, returning from injury to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open, the final of Newport, the third round of London 2012 Olympic Games for singles and the mixed doubles semi-final with Stosur.

Ms Stuckey said both players joined an exciting line-up of top sporting talent for the 2013 event, including Andy Murray, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.

“Events like this are a major contributor to the state’s economy, playing an important role in the Newman Government’s goal to double overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020,” she said.

The 2013 Brisbane International will take place at the Queensland Tennis Centre in Brisbane from 30 December 2012 to 6 January 2013.
