IN yet another attempt to avoid the true cost to tourism and small business, Tourism Minister Jan Jarratt today told parliament Labor’s carbon tax would be good for tourism.

LNP Shadow Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business Jann Stuckey said every tourism operator would be horrified by Jan Jarratt’s latest effort to gloss the impact of the carbon tax on Queensland’s struggling tourism sector.

“The Minister failed to disclose or even address the costs of Labor’s carbon tax to our ailing tourism industry,” Ms Stuckey said.

“Ms Jarratt again showed how totally out of her depth she is. She would rather support her Federal Labor mates than stand up for Queensland.

“Everyone from airline managers to local motel and tour operators knows Labor’s carbon tax will hammer Queensland tourism, destroy local businesses and cost jobs.

“Jan Jarratt failed to mention the clear warning in the Government’s own modelling that states on page 27:

More price sensitive domestic holiday makers may be influenced by increased costs of domestic air travel. International travel is relatively unaffected by the carbon price, as is light vehicle travel. The planned aviation fuel increases may have significant impacts on small businesses that use light air or helicopters.

“Jan Jarratt might be wild about the carbon tax, but everyone I talk to in tourism is truly wild about her failure to stand up and represent their industry.

“Tourism is an industry that will cop the brunt of Labor’s tax – from higher domestic airfares, higher room rates, higher transport costs and higher electricity rates.

“The Deloitte report** released today by the Treasurer notes tourism sectors that comprise 85 per cent of the industry output such as retail, accommodation, food and beverage and air travel, will face substantial secondary impacts.

“I challenge Jan Jarratt to come clean and tell small business and tourism operators how much this tax will truly cost them.

“The last thing our tourism sector needs is a lazy Minister in a very lazy government.

“The LNP will work for all Queenslanders, not just ourselves.”
