Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey has announced Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will travel to Queensland this December.

Newly crowned US Open champion Serena Williams and 2012 French Open champion Maria Sharapova today confirmed they had signed on for the 2013 Brisbane International at the Queensland Tennis Centre.

“Major events such as this have a proven track record of delivering significant economic benefits for the host-region and return on tax payer investment, said Ms Stuckey.

“That’s why in this year’s State Budget events funding has been increased to $49.6 million in 2012-13.

“The Newman Government is proud to support the 2013 Brisbane International through Events Queensland as part of a growing calendar of major sporting events delivering significant economic and tourism benefits for the state.

“Hosting events which attract visitors during shoulder and low seasons is also an important part of our action plan outlined at Destination Q in Cairns earlier this year.”

Ms Stuckey said Queensland tennis fans would be thrilled to welcome Williams and Sharapova to Brisbane for the 2013 Tournament.

“Last year, the Brisbane International attracted a record 92,802 attendees, giving Queensland world-wide exposure as a great event and holiday destination,” she said.

“I have no doubt the addition of such impressive and highly-skilled female tennis stars will add to the excitement of the tournament, attracting more people in 2013.”

Throughout her career, Williams has captured an impressive 45 WTA singles titles and on 4 August 2012 she became only the second woman after Steffi Graf to complete a career Golden Grand Slam, winning all four Grand Slams plus an Olympic gold medal.

Sharapova has won 27 WTA singles titles and has seen a great 2012 so far, reaching the final of the Australian Open, being crowned the French Open champion and winning an Olympic silver medal.

Funding received through Events Queensland helped to establish the Brisbane International as a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Premier event from 2012 – attracting more star players and an increased prize purse to establish the tournament in the top WTA Premier events in the world.

The 2013 Brisbane International will take place at the Queensland Tennis Centre, Brisbane, from 30 December 2012 to 6 January 2013.
